Call for Nominations for the Elected Positions of the Board of Directors
The International Atherosclerosis Society will have a new board of directors for the 2025-2027 term. The board will be officially elected during the Council of Constituent Societies meeting on December 5, 2024, at the 20th International Symposium on Atherosclerosis in Muscat, Oman.
The slate of candidates to be voted by the council will be developed by the nominating committee based on a nomination process.
Who is the nominating committee?
The nominating committee shall be comprised of the president-elect and four members in good standing who are neither serving on the executive committee nor are candidates for elected office. The nominating committee is selected by the president, approved by the executive committee, and is chaired by the current president-elect.
The members are:
- Dirk Blom, South Africa – Chair
- Marianne Abifadel, Lebanon
- Maria Cristina Izar, Brazil
- Antonio Gotto, United States
- Frederick Raal, South Africa
What positions are up for election?
The nominating committee will convene and prepare a slate including one candidate for each of the following elected offices:
- President: this position will be filled by the current president-elect.
- President-Elect
- Secretary
- Treasurer
- Up to 9 Members at Large of the Board of Directors
Following the election, in January 2025, the executive committee will appoint the remaining board positions:
- Up to 8 appointed members
- The chairs of the regional federations, who will then help select up to 9 members of the regional federation.

Who can serve?
When selecting nominees, the committee may consider any member in good standing including candidates proposed by IAS members.
Current board members’ eligibility
- Members of the board can serve consecutive and multiple terms.
- The secretary and treasurer may be re-elected to a second term.
- The treasurer needs to be US-based for banking and tax purposes.
- In successive terms of office, the president-elect assumes first the office of president, and then immediate past president.
Deadlines and process
Candidates will be nominated by their peers or self-nominated. IAS will contact all candidates who were not self-nominated to ensure they are willing to serve if slated. The deadline for nomination submissions is August 13.
The nominating committee will report its slate of nominees to the executive committee who will notify the Council of Constituent Societies no later than 60 days before the date set for the election of offices and members of IAS’ Board of Directors.
